Abstract
The result of identifying and assessing the problems of yam cultivation was for both villages, that clearing and soil preparation are the only significant labour peaks. Since these constraints are also effective for the cassava enterprise, the competitiveness of yam is not affected. The most serious disadvantages of yam are the sett requirement and probably the sensitivity against declining soil fertility. The production risk weighs more heavily for yam than for cassava, but it does not seem to be so serious that it favours cassava. The same was found for pests and the storage losses of yam...
