Abstract
The 90% increase in paddy production which occurred in West Africa in the last 25 years (1960-84) was due largely to extensive cultivation rather than intensive methods of cultivation. The riceland expanded by nearly 70% while the average yield per hectare increased by only 13.5%. The distribution of riceland in West Africa is greatly skewed. Considering the 1980/84 period, about 80% of the ricelands are found in five countries, namely, Nigeria, Guinea, Sierra Leone, C0te d’Ivoire and Liberaia. The remaining the countries growing rice in the region account for the remaining 20%. The distribution of Riceland partly reflects the importance of rice as a traditional stable foodcrop, the recent emphasis placed on rice development and level of population in the different countries…
