Abstract

The effect of scattered trees of Prosopis cineraria (10/ha), Tecomella undulata (6/ha), Acacia albida [Faidherbia alba] (3/ha) and Azadirachta indica (3/ha) in a farmer's field in the arid region of Haryana, India, was assessed on the productivity of Hordeum vulgare (barley). Five trees of each species (average ages 16, 10, 5 and 8 yr, respectively) were selected in November 1993 and barley var. C-138 sown under them in the first week of November 1993 and 1994. The yield and yield attributing parameters of barley increased under the tree species compared with those in areas devoid of trees. P. cineraria enhanced the grain yield by 86.0%, T. undulata by 48.8%, F. albida by 57.9% and A. indica by 16.8% over the control. The soils under the tree canopies were rich in organic carbon content, moisture availability and nutrient status (N, P and K).
