Abstract
Sorghum nutans cv. CSV 5 had 5–10 times higher rates of associative nitrogenase activity and decreased transpiration rates compared to cv. IS 5218 and produced significantly less stomata (1.3 × 107plant−) than the “low fixing” cultivar (2.3 × 107 plant−). Total exudate prodúction of cv. CSV 5 in all tested rooting media (suspension without and with glassbeads, sand) was up to 30% less than in cv. IS 5218. In contrast, release of exudates g−1 root dry wt was 10–20% higher than in cv. IS 5218. Differences in composition of root exudates from both cultivars were observed. Roots of cv. CSV 5 released significantly (40%) more polar substances, likely to be dicarboxylic acids (malic, succinic, fumaric and oxalic acid) than cv. IS 5218. Larger rhizosphere zones with pH-values below 7.5 were established by cv. CSV 5 compared to cv. IS 5218.
