Abstract
The relation between forest management and the associated increment in water yields for the Northern Sierra forests of California are investigated. A small drainage in the Plumas National Forest on the South Fork of the Feather River is considered. Toevaluate the outcome of alternative forest management options, a version of FORPLAN, the linear programming tool used by the Forest Service in its land management planning is used. To determine the extent to which increments in water flow can be effectively utilized, the stream flows below theforest are simulated and optimal operating rules for the reservoir system are computed. Once this is accomplished, the comparative economic benefit of various timber management practices can be analyzed
