Abstract

Field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2011-12 to study the effect on in situ moisture conservationpractice sara border strips versus flat bed in rabi sorghum based cropping systems [sole rabi sorghum, sole chickpea, rabi sorghum + chickpea 2:1, 1:2, 1:4 ratios and Random mixed cropping of rabi sorghum + chickpea (50% recommended seed rate of chickpea) and Random mixed cropping of rabi sorghum + chickpea (75% recommended seed rate of chickpea)] under rainfed vertisols at RARS, Bijapur. The results revealed that among the in situ moisture conservation practices, sara border strips recorded higher grain yield, moisture use efficiency, sorghum equivalent yield and found to be highly economical. Among all the intercropping systems, 1:4 Rabi sorghum + chickpea intercropping system recorded significantly higher grain yield(1277 kg ha-1) compared to rest of the treatments
