Abstract
During the three years, 212 demonstrations on wheat, rice, maize, and oilseed (Raya) were laid out.The demonstrations revealed interesting and useful findings of a practical nature. The balanced use of N and P2O5 on the average increased yield by 50% over N alone. In addition, in all the demonstrations, improved farming practices (improved seed, weed control, increased plant population andcontrol of insects), further increased yield by 15 to 30%. These yield increases thus improved fertilizer use efficiency by the same magnitude. Thus with improved farm management practices at the same level of applied nutrients (N + P), the farmers' yield and net profit increased appreciatively.The response of all the crops to fertilizer throughout the country, nutrient wise was highest to P, followed by N and K. On average, response ratios of N, P and K for wheat were 6,7,9.1 and 4.1, respectively. Average response ratio of NPK for wheat was 7.5. Similarly, in Basmati rice (paddy)response ratios of N and P were 6.9 and 12.0, respectively. In coarse rice varieties, average response to P was higher (14.9) than for N 4.9). Response ratios for maize {N (8.2, P (12.5) and K (5)} followed the same trend as in other cereal crops. Studies were also conducted to calibrate soil testP values with crop response. Forty two (42) trials, each with three repeats, were conducted throughout the Punjab. Critical limits and phosphorus recommendations at these levels were established. The results available from residual/cumulative P studies in crop rotations indicated P build-up overtime
