Abstract

Fertilizer is the king-pin of agriculture, and its intensive and balanced human population. But fertilizers being products of the industry are costly in -puts, particularly in countries like India. It is well known that Indian soils are extremely dificient in nitrogen and its unthinkable to have satisfactory yields of crops without the use of nitrogenous fertilizers. Ammoniacal fertilizers are the most important. The loss of nitrogen through leaching and volatilisation puts a serious limitation on the economy of nitrogenous fertilizers. The phenomenon of ammonia fixtion in soils has both positive and negative aspects from the point of view of efficiency of nitrogenous fertilizers. In this bulletin, an attempt has been made to review the work done on ammonia fixation in Indian soils and its practical implications. Next to nitrogen in importance are phosphatic and potassic fertilizers. The phenomenon of phosphate fixation has been discussed by the authors in another bulletin published by the I.C.A.R. In the present bulletin, however, the situation with regard to potassium fixation has been reviewed which is important for Indian situations because almost all the potassic fertilizers are imported, and hence are costly inputs. Secondly the major agricultural soils groups being alluvial, with the type of clay minerals, the potassium fixation becomes a serious problem. It has a lot of practical implications. These problems, as they relate to the Indian soils, have been discussed in this bulletin
