Abstract
This paper reviews the important links between agriculture and nutrition and in doing so tries to elucidate whatis known about the linkages between agricultural research, technological change in agriculture, and nutrition. Using lessons learned from prior experience, the paper identifies agricultural policies and programs that offer a high potential of bringing about improvements in the health andnutritional status of the population. The next chapter provides a conceptual framework outlining the links between agricutlural research, agricultural and food policies, and nutritional status. This is followed by a chapter that summarizes the major areas of agricultural research over the past20-30 years. In this chapter, research is defined in a broad sense and thus includes both basic biological research as well as the more applied, policy-oriented research. Next is a review of how this investment in agricultural research has influenced the agricultural technologies that have beenimplemented in developing countries. Another chapter is devoted to other, non-technological issues that can affect the success of agricultural innovations in alleviating malnutrition. Finally, the paper identifies areas for future agricultural research and government policy that offer a highpotential for nutritional impact
