Abstract

FADINAP and FAO commissioned a study to produce a method for measuring fertilizer losses in the marketing system so that the true situation could be known and comparable figures obtained in different member developing countries. This methodology has now been produced and field tested and is presented in a two-part report. Part I gives the background to where and why fertilizer losses occur and gives suggestions as to how such losses may be minimized. Part II gives full details of how the methodology for measuring the losses should be implemented in the respective member countries. This measurement method is designed for countries to implement by themselves. It would be run by a part-time coordinator taking up an estimated 30 working days over a three month period. It is intended that his final report will identify accurately the extent of fertilizer losses, show where and why they are occurring and give the remedial action necessary to reduce loss levels to the tolerance values for the distribution systems concerned
