Abstract
In this paper the author examines the potential conflict between the promotion of two economic objectives, growth and equality, in a rural division of Eastern Kenya. The focus is primarily on the response of the relatively poor and the relatively wealthy farmers to the agricultural innovation recommended by the extension service, and the conclusion is drawn that only relatively wealthy farmers can be expected to supply the necessary resources for and carry the risks can be expected to supply the necessary resources for and carry the risks of innovation. Therefore, if innovations are economically successful in Mbere, they will increase the economic inequality which already exists
