Abstract

Georgia has maintained its position as the leading producer of peanuts in the United States since 1944 (USDA 1955-1982). During the 1975-82 period growers in Georgia produced an average of 43% of the national crop(table 1). Factors contributing to Georgia's dominance have been a large share of national peanut acreage and above-average yields. Peanut acreage has remained relatvely constant in the United Sates with an average of 1.52 million acres over the 1975-79 period (USDA 1976-80). Acreage in Georgia over this same period averaged 525,800 acres, 35% of the national total. During the 1980-82 period, acreage in the United States averaged 1.39 million acres; Georgia accounted for 37% of the total (USDA 1981, 1982). Peanut yield in Georgia averaged 3136 Ib/acre, compared with a national average of 2547 1b/acre during the 1975-79 period (USDA 1976-80), Yields over the 1980-82 period averaged 2687 1b/acre for Georgia and 2335 for the United States (USDA 1981-82). This report is based on information obtained from a survey, published data from the agricultural census, and U.S. Department of Agriculture peanut production data. Three main sections of the report include 1) the methodoloy of the sample and survey; 2) production data comprising acreage, types, irrigation, yield, price, and revenue, and 3) pesticide-related information including pest control advice, meterials used, area treated, number and rate of applications, and material cost
