Abstract

As a component of Farming Systems Research Programme, a study in Northern Zambia was initiated in 1984 to identify the causes of malnutrition and the possibilities to utilize the dambos to extend the agricultural season, in that way filling the production gaps during the dry season. This document(Part 1), deals with the methodological aspects of the study, presenting a review of Farming Systems Research based on the author's personal experience and on literature studies. The origin, theoretical development and the practical implications of the approach are critically discussed. The green revolution is presented in relation to resource poor farming and transfer of technology. The biass and constraints of national agricultural research in the third world, its relation with agriculture extension and the structural influences on traditional farming are also examined. On-station and on-farm research are discussed with respect to their complementary role and the complexity of trial analysis and interpretation of results. One way of technology generation in farming systems research is presented through a case study. Part two will deal with the farming system and the agronomic feasibility, production strategies and risks of dambo utilization
