Abstract

The Technical Conference on the Development of Food Marketing Systems in Large Urban Areas in Latin America was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 6 to 17 May 1973 and was attended by delegates from most Latin American countries, as well as by observers from Spain and Portugal and from international organisations. The objective of the Conference was to analyse the situation and trends of food marketing systems for large urban areas in Latin America and to farmulats strategies and plan for adjusting the present food marketing systems to present and future requirment. The Conference reviwed the situation and trends in food marketing in Latin American cities. Reference was made in this connection to the changes which have taken place in food marketing in Western Europe and North America, Although there are many differences in food marketing of various Latin American cities, there are also many common patterns of development and problem to be solved. When discussing the scope for developing efficient food marketing systems, the Conference paid particular attention to the food supply to the large number of low income consumers. It was concluded that the modernisation of food distribution requires more cooperation and integration in the retail/wholesale sector which would permit the faster introduction of improved management, purchasing, storage and sales methods. Attention was given to the establishment of voluntary chains and retail cooperatives and to the introduction of self-service methods where justified. The Conference reviewed government policies and services required to promote the modernisation process and felt that specific plans and programmes are urgently needed to determine objectives and priorities more closely. This would require a special institution or department where all responsibilities for urban food whole saling and retailing are coordinated. The Conference also discussed apects of consumer protection, of applied research, of applied research, of training programmes and of financing.
