Abstract

Yam is one of the food crops for which the International institute of tropical Agriculture (IITA) has been assigned major responsibility to increase crop yield through breeding improved genetic potential and developing more efficient production systems It is an important food crop in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria which produces about 90 percent of the yam gram in the region. one of the roles of the agricultural economists at the Institute is to describe crop production systems and identify major production constraints faced by large members of farmers in selected ecological zones. These studies are used to assist researchers at IITA in defining specific crop research priorities and developing improved production systems which are potentially attractive to the small landholder
