Abstract

A total of 54 genotypes from three maturity groups, early, medium and late, were evaluated for yield in 48 environments (six sites and various treatments for planting date, density, tillage and irrigation) in 1978 and 1979. Genotypes responded differently to years and environments within a year. The genotype X environment (GE) interaction increased with increase in duration of plant growth (maturity), more than half the genotype X year and GE within year sums of squares being due to maturity. Genotypes showed larger interaction with environments within year than with years, irrespective of maturity. It is suggested that a reliable evaluation of relative genotype performance can be made if the genotypes to be tested do not represent a wide range of maturity. Minimizing differences in maturity among genotypes reduces GE interaction. Testing at more locations, or environments at given locations, should be done rather than testing in more years.
