Abstract
Pearlmillet [Pennisetum typhoides (Burm.f.) Stapf & C.E. Hubb..], cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (Linn.) Walp.subsp. cylindrica (Linn.) Van-Eseltine] and soybean [Glycine max (Linn.) Merr.], grown either for foder or grain, showed marked response to P. The response was more prominent in pearlmillet. The residual effect of P on the succeeding Wheat (Triticum aestivum Linn. Emend.Thell.) was very much distinct. As the level of P of the previous crops increased, the yield of wheat increased proportionately. Pearlmillet very much reduced the yield of the succeeding wheat but cowpea and soybean as preceding crop were equally effective in increasing wheat yield. Soil tests showed that the available P was high after both monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, the magnitude depending upon the rate of P application. The yield of wheat after grain cowpea or grain soybean was generally higher than after fodder crops. The maximum profit was obtained from grain soybean-wheat sequence.
