Abstract

The effects of HCO3- on shoot and root dry matter content, total and HCl-extractable iron uptake, and leaf visual chlorosis were studied in maize. Thirteen hybrid maize varieties were grown in perlite and irrigated with nutrient solutions consisting of basic nutrient solution with 20 µM FeEDTA (control), iron-free nutrient solution (direct deficiency) and complete basic nutrient solution supplemented with 7.5, 15.0 or 30.0 mH HCO3- (indirect bicarbonate-induced iron deficiency). The application of 20 µM Fe-EDTA increased shoot and root dry weights in general, as well as the 1N HCl-extractable iron and total iron concentrations in shoots and roots. Slight growth reduction and dry weight loses were determined, but total and 1N HCl-extractable iron concentration, and 1N HCl-extractable iron concentration in shoots and roots were severely effected with the increasing amounts of HCO3-. High leaf chlorosis score, and low root and shoot dry weight values were recorded for all maize varieties. Based on visual deficiency scores, dry weight, and total iron content, and 1N HCl-extractable iron content, Kendo and C-955 were selected as the most tolerant cultivars, whereas Isİdoro MF was identified as the least tolerant cultivar
