Abstract

Of the total estimated (Abrol and Bhumbla, 1971) 7 million hectares of salt affected soils in the country, nearly 2.8 million hectares are spread in the Indo-gangetic alluvial plains in the states' of Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and parts of Bihar und Rajasthan. Published literature on the nature of salt affected soils in these areas brings out that soil alkalinity is by far a major problem in these areas. Studies on highly deteriorated alkali soils at the experimental farm of the Central Soil Salinity Research Institute during the past four years have shown that by following proper soil-water management and cultural practices it is possible to utilize these 'soils successfully for growing such crops as Rice, Wheat, Barley, Berseem, Raya etc. The management practices for growing crops successfully in these soils are different than those adopted for growing these crops in soils unaffected by alkalinity. The present bulletin is in response to the continuous demand by those engaged in reclamation work, extention workers and farmers attempting to reclaim such areas. It is hoped that the bulletin will be found useful by these and others interested in the utilization of the sizable chunk of salt affected area in the country.
