Abstract
This paper summarises the results of research into the economics of small-scale farming in Masii location, Lowland Machakos. It deals with the role of cotton, which was found to be only a marginal improvement on traditional food crops grown at present, particularly in the low rainfall years. The special position of maize, the stable food, and the high price of importing maize in the low rainfall years, is partly responsible for cotton not being more attractive in places like Masii...
