Abstract
In this paper, some thoughts on the various dimensions of the move towards sustainable agriculture, with a stress on the Latin American and Caribbean viewpoint, are offered. The perspective of the developing countries is not opposed to the viewpoints of other regions of the world, but does emphasize the development requirements of this particular region. In the second section, the concept of sustainability is discussed. In the third section, certain data pertaining to the situation of Latin America and the Caribbean is summarized, and in the fourth, the dimensions of a perspective that are specific to the region are discussed. The fifth section deals with the possibilities and limitations of a strategy for sustainable agricultural development. In the sixth and last section, some ideas as to specific actions that might be taken, especially concerning research and technological development, are offered
