Abstract

Surveys during 1983-85 identified 21 diseases on this crop, the 2nd most important in Honduras. Healthy sorghum plantsproduced 50% more grain than plants infected by Acremonium strictum while maize dwarf mosaic potyvirus infection caused a 54% loss. Peronosclerospora sorghi was responsible for 44% yield loss in unprotected plots and Cercospora sorghi for 20%. In another study using a mathematical model developedfrom disease severity data, C. sorghi, Ramulispora sorghicola and Puccinia purpurea caused losses of 15, 5 and 3%, respectively. In field trials of sorghum accessions, at various locations, sources of resistance to 6 of these diseases were identified and recommended as breeding stock in animprovement programme.
