Abstract

The insect pollinators visiting the pigeon pea flower consisted of honey bees viz., Apis cerana, A. mellifera, A. dorsata and other pollinators like Xylocopa leucothorax, X. fenestrata, Polystis habrious, Vespa magnifica, Papilio demoleus, Musca domestica and Monomorium indicum. Out of these A. cerana was maximum (51.65%) followed by A. mellifera (10.20%), A. dorsata (4.24%), X. fenestarata (5.32%), X. leucothorax (4.28%). Besides these, M. indicum (9.72%), P. demoleus (8.52%) were also found as frequent visitors. The foraging behaviour of A. cerana was observed on pigeon pea during 2011 and 2012. The maximum number of A. cerana per sq.m per minute was found to be 11.28 during 1000–1100 hours and minimum was 3.04 during 1300–1400 hours of the day. The maximum frequency of flower visit was found to be 22.37 and minimum was 3.34. Likewise, maximum time spent per flower was found to be 3.64 seconds during 0900-1000 hours and minimum was 1.31 seconds during 1300–1400 hours of the day. Whereas, maximum number of flower visit per trip was recorded to be 264.37 during 1000–1100 hours and minimum was 135.85 during 1300–1400 hours of the day and maximum pollen load was found to be 5.75 mg during 1000–1100 hours and minimum was 3.41 mg during 1300–1400 hours of the day. The various meteorological factors influenced the foraging activities of A. cerana significantly of which temperature showed positive relationship with foraging behaviour of honeybee. On the other hand, relative humidity showed non significant negative relationship
