Abstract
Karyotype analysis was carried out on root tip squashes of the following material: Alexander's Synthetic B tetraploid (2n = 4x = 40) crossed with a diploid inbred line (2n = 2x = 20) to obtain triploids (2n = 3x = 30); these triploids crossed with the diploid line; and the resultant plants selfed or crossed with the diploid line. Grains were identified as plump, semiplump, or shrivelled. It was found that: (1) any extra chromosome was transmitted through the female gamete in the 3x X 2x crosses; and (2) plump grains from 3x X 2x crosses had the highest frequency of 2n = 21 trisomic plants and a high survival rate
