Abstract

Karnal bunt is caused by Tilletia indica Mitra, which partially infects seed of wheat and triticale in Mexico. Thepurpose of this report is to estimate the direct costs (Yield losses, quality losses including the cost of handling and marketing infected grain, and the loss of seed export markets in view of restrictions imposed after Karnal bunt was found in Mexico) and indirect costs associated with preventingthe spread of KB, reducing its severity, seed treatment, fumigation costs associated with grain shipments, costs for regulating authorities, and costs of Karnal bunt research in Mexico. The results of the study emphasize the economic importance of KB and the need to research and develop effectivemeasures of control. In addition, the high costs of some of the control measures have been identified, so that the merits of some of the current policies regarding KB can be evaluated
