Abstract

Experiments were conducted to compare the oviposition preference of Callosobruchus maculatus on 18 pigeonpea, Cajanus cajan cultivars. Cultivars B9, B35, B26PL2, B52 and B59 appear to be more resistance to attack by C. maculatus than the other cultivars tested. Duration from adult parent ovipositing to F1 adult emergence waslongest in cultivar B35 (33 days) and shortest in cultivars B59 and B200. The highest mean number of eggs oviposited by parent was on cultivar B26PL2 (3.69 eggs/seed) while the highest by F1 was on cultivar B140PL1 (7.36 eggs/seed). Cultivar B9 had the lowest larval penetration (23.74%) among the cultivars tested while cultivar B26 had the highest adult emergence (90.20%). Highest egg to adult survival occurred on cultivar B188 (65.00%) and lowest on cultivar B59 (10.50%). The Dobie index of susceptibility ranged from 4.61 (B35 and B52) to 7.98 (B200) and was correlated to testa thickness and per cent larval penetration.
