Abstract
The present investigation was done to study the morphology and effectivity of mesorhizobia nodulating reverted non nodulating lines (ICC 4993 NN (R)) of chickpea in comparison to the normal chickpea cultivars (HC 5). The isolation efficiency of mesorhizobia was found to be 56% in cultivar (cv) ICC4993NN (R) and 27% in cultivar (cv) HC 5 from nodules. A total of 66 isolates were selected from both the cultivars based on their growth characteristics. The mesorhizobial isolates from both the cultivars were Gram negative and showed considerable variation in colony colour and morphology. Mesorhizobial isolates from cv ICC4993NN (R) showed 17% dye uptake while that from HC 5 showed 10% dye uptake. All the isolates made from cv ICC4993NN (R) and HC5 showed nodulation under sterilized conditions. Eleven isolates - NN2, NN11, NN18, NN19,NN24, NN94, NN518, NN229, NNs14, HC1010 and HC1062 showed nodulation less than five nodules per plant whereas rest of the 55 isolates showed positive nodulation (more than five nodules/plant). The increase in nodule number, nodule dry weight, shoot dry weight, plant height and symbiotic ratio of chickpea plants inoculated with isolates from cv ICC4993NN (R) were comparable to the isolates from HC 5
