Abstract

The evidence for zoospore production by Zoophagus insidians is considered and it is concluded that mixed collections have been responsible for this attribute. Morphological, ultrastructural and chemotaxonomic data relating to Z. insidians are reviewed: two distinct fungi have been reported under this binomial. Comparisons with Acaulopage pectospora have been assessed. As a result the species characters of Zoophagus insidians are amended and the following nomenclatural changes are made: Zoophagus pectosporus (Drechsler) comb. nov., Lecophagus fasciculatus gen. et sp. nov. — the new binomial for the culture of Whisler & Travland, and L. navicularis (Tzean & Barron) comb. nov. A diagnostic key is provided. The four fungi are placed in the Zoopagales.
