Abstract
Chickpea (Cicer arientinum L.) is an important component of diet in developing countries. Zinc (Zn) deficiency, quite common in most of the chickpea-growing areas of the world, forms a yield-limiting factor in chickpea production, as it reduces yield and nutritional quality of grain. This study attempts to identify Zn-efficient chickpea genotypes, differing in Zn-accumulating capacity. Initially, twenty-one genotypes were screened for their ability to accumulate Zn, when grown in low (0.01 mg ZnSO4/L nutrient solution) Zn condition. Seven genotypes, differing in Zn-accumulating capacity, were selected for evaluation of their yield attributes in sand culture under green house condition. They showed wide genetic variability for Zn accumulation and a general increase in shoot dry weight, grain weight per plant and relative yield. Also, a substantial correlation was observed between Zn uptake, Zn accumulation and yield response, like relative grain yield. Zn efficiency of chickpea genotypes (in terms of grain yield under Zn-deficient condition) was related to their Zn-accumulating capacity. A significant positive relationship between Zn-accumulating capacity at early growth stage and grain yield (r=0.938) suggests that the former could be used as a parameter for assessing the Zn-efficient genotypes at early growth stage, without relying on expensive field testing. This study should constitute a useful step towards identifying Zn-efficient genotypes of crop plants, especially of chickpea
