Abstract

This publication focuses on rice and rice based farming systems as critical components of the Asian food system. One is a study of the environmental constraints to increased productivity of rainfed rice-based farming systems in the lowland and upland regions of Sri Lanka and the Philippines, and the other focuses on the socioeconomic factors responsible for the difference between potential productivity and the actual farm performance. This report contains abstracts of papers given at a 5- day workshop held in at Illoilo, Philippines, 20-24 July, 1987 to review project results, and also contains recommendations concerning present extension practices and future research needs
