Abstract

Male sterile sibs of 3 genetically male sterile lines, namely, MS 3A, MS 4A (medium maturity, indeterminate) and MS Prabhat (early maturity, determinate), were hand-pollinated with 10 medium and 10 early maturity pollinators. The resultant 60 hybrids and parents were grown during 1985-86 and data recorded for 5 traits. As a result of high heterosis for pods/plant, plant height and branches/plant, many of the hybrids showed significant heterosis for seed yield/plant. These hybrids also had early maturity with reduced plant height. Heterosis for seed yield over better parent was highest for crosses MS 3A X DL78-1 and MS Prabhat X ICPL384 (80 and 78%, respectively); when compared with the standard variety BDN2, crosses MS 3A X ICPL8504, MS 4A X B12 and MS 3A X ICPL6997 were the best. Hybrids with 2 early parents were superior for early maturity but not for yield, and high heterotic hybrids had at least one medium maturing parent
