Abstract

Combining ability effects for fodder yield and component traits were studied in six male sterile lines viz., ICSA 467, ICSA 276, 993100A, ICSA 271, SP 55609A and 11A2 and nine pollinator parents (testers) viz., Pant Chari 5, Pant Chari 6, HC 260, UPMC 512, UTMC 523, UTMC 532, CSV 15, UPMC 8 and PMC-04 700R and their 54 crosses developed through mating the parents in line x tester design. The estimate of variances due to specific combining ability (ó2sca) and general combining ability (ó2gca) and their ratio (ó2sca/ó2gca) indicated the importance of non-additive type of gene action for fodder yield and component. Male sterile lines, namely, ICSA-271, ICSA-276, 993100A, SP 55609A and pollinators UTMC 532, UPMC 8, and their crosses ICSA 271 x UTMC 523 and ICSA 271 x 700R were identified as best for forage yield and important component traits.
