Abstract

Four characters of cowpea were studied in a cross involving true breeding cultivars Selection-2 and K11. Parents and F1s were grown during 1982 and the F2 and F3 segregating generations during 1983. A trigenic ratio of 39 tendrillar : 25 non-tendrillar plants was observed for growth habit in the F2 generation, with one basic, one inhibitory and one antiinhibitory gene. Large seed size and red stipule colour were monogenically dominant over small seed size and green stipule colour, with a good fit of 3 : 1 in the F2. A digenic ratio of 9 : 7 was observed for stem pigmentation. Phenotypic segregation revealed that the basic gene for growth habit is linked with the dominant gene for seed size, with a crossover value of 46%. A 17.4% crossover was seen between one complementary gene for stem pigmentation and the gene for stipule colour
