Abstract
The availability of improved data will determine whether the search for new methodologies, which are more accurate than present ones for determining fertiliser demand, is successful. The author briefly reviews various ways of estimating fertiliser demand and emphasises the need for analysts to make clear the assumptions and limitations of the methods used which may influence their value to policy makers.
