Abstract
Earlier studies showed that in Cyprus, chickpeas do not fix sufficient atmospheric nitrogen due to the absence of efficient indigenous Rhizobia. Introduction of Rhizobium inoculants and testing for Nz fixation efficiency was carried out at three locations (Athalassa, Laxia, Dromolaxia). The treatments were inoculated chickpea and two reference crops, which were uninoculated chickpea and barley. In isotope microflots, 5% atom excess labelled ammonium sulfate was applied at the rate of 1.5 g N/m . Four harvests of whole above ground biomass were made at 20-day intervals starting from emergence. Inoculation of chickpea enhanced Nz fixation which reached up to 72% of the N in the plants. On average, Nz fixation accounted for 50% of the N in the plants. This rate of Nz fixation is rather moderate, which could be due to the low efficiency of the strain used or poor matching of the strain with the chickpea cultivar. The relatively low rainfall (250 to 300 mm) and possible water stress was another reason for the low Nz fixed. New strains of Rhizobium should be tested towards an attempt to increase Nz fixation. The two reference crops used gave similar results. It was also concluded that uninoculated chickpea is not always a good reference crop in estimating Nz fixation of nodulated chickpea by the difference method
