Abstract
The effect of flowering and the pegging zone environment on fruit development was investigated in groundnut cv. Virginia Bunch Improved, Valencia and Spanish grown in pots. Response to the pegging environment varied with cv. In all 3 cv., flowering occurred gradually towards the shoot apices. Virginia Bunch had a longer average gynophore length at nodes 3-8 than did the other cv. Average pod weight was affected mainly by cv. The steep decline in average pod weight from node 7 upwards was due to the inhibition by early-produced fruit of fruit development from later flowers, reduced pod-development time and reduced CO2 assimilation by the parent plants. Valencia produced normal pods on gynophores not penetrating the soil while Spanish produced no pods under such conditions. Translocation of nutrients from roots to pods was observed.-F.A.S.
