Abstract
The small seeded and slightly 'pops' disease susceptible groundnut cv. (a) Natal Common and the medium seeded, pops susceptible (b) Makulu Red were grown in a glasshouse in 2 different soils and in sol. culture. The objective was to determine opt. growth conditions in order to define the role of Ca in seed development. In both soil experiments (b) produced more vegetative growth and fewer seeds than (a). This was also found in sol. culture, where application of 6 meq Ca/l to the medium increased the fomation of seed in (a), but was without effect in (b). Attempts to stimulate pod formation by varying the N supply showed that fruit set was poorer at 2 meq N/l and 0.5 g N/pot than in the treatments with 4 meq N/l in nutrient sol. or inoculated with rhizobia. The lowering of the K conc. from 3.6 to 0.6 meq/l thereby changing the K:Ca ratio from 0.6 to 0.1 did not influence seed formation. Application of 45Ca to bunches of detached pegs indicated improved translocation of Ca from the pericarp to the seed in (a).
