Abstract
Sixty crosses of Pearlmillet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) made by Gopinath(1980) were evaluated in two experiments(1) with seven high x low crosses selected one for each character under study and (2) with remaining 53 crosses subjected to early physiological cauterization. In the first experiment the ‘F2’ was obtained after intermating respective ‘F1’to ‘F2’ generation for the characters for which they were selected, due to transgresses segregation, except within hybrid selected for plant height, A shift towards desirable charcters( dwarfness, longer earheads, more ear grith, higher tiller number, heaviour seeds) was found as the generation were advanced. Correlation co-efficients revealed that selection pressure should be imposed on tiller number, ear lengh and ear girth for the improvement of the crop...
