Abstract

Groundnuts cv. Virginia Bunch were grown in 1982-83 in the Ord River Irrigation Area to assess effects of foliage pathogens (Cercosporidium personatum [Mycosphaerella berkeleyi], Cercospora arachidicola [Mycosphaerella arachidis] and Puccinia arachidis) on growth and yield. Fungicide treatments consisted of 1275 g chlorothalonil/ha applied every 7, 14 or 21 days or 1275 g chlorothalonil every 7 days + 140 g benomyl/ha every 14 days. Plants were harvested at 22, 36, 57, 71, 91 or 122 days from emergence and at maturity. Foliage disease in unprotected plants caused severe defoliation and 30% reduction in commercial yield. Reduced interception of incident PAR during pod filling and lower pod numbers contributed directly to the reduced yield; the former resulted from effects of foliage pathogens on either photosynthetic capacity of remaining leaves or on patterns of assimilate distribution. Data on PAR interception and remaining leaf area did not completely explain the effects of foliage pathogens on crop yield. Treatment with chlorothalonil + benomyl decreased commercial yield relative to chlorothalonil treatment alone, while yields with chlorothalonil increased with decreasing frequency of application; these effects were probably due to altered patterns of assimilate distribution. The rate of increase in seed size was lower in protected than in unprotected plots, resulting in a greater proportion of total pod yield consisting of small immature pods which were lost during threshing
