Abstract
Research carried out during 1983-91 on diseases of food legume crops and the scope for their management in Zambia is described. The 3 major crops, groundnut, bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and cowpea are covered in detail along with the results of a smaller study on the minor food legume crops: bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea), pigeon pea and chickpea. The relative prevalence and importance of the diseases of these crops were determined on the basis of surveys taken in farmers' fields in the major agro-ecological zones
