Abstract

Intercropping systems, in which two or more crops are grown in alternate rows at roughly the same time, have advantages of yield and stability, but the competition effects in these systems have implication s for genotype evaluation. The sorghum/cowpea intercrop was selected for experimental study of these effects firstly, because of the importance of the both crops for the tropical semi-arid areas of Asia, Africa and potentially for the dry areas of South America, and secondly, because a very meagre amount of information is available for this particular system. The main emphasis is placed on the study of variation among sorghum genotypes because the sorghum has more influence on the final yield than does the cowpea.....
