Abstract
Variability available for selection, the nature and magnitude of the association of resistance to Phaeoisariopsis personata [Mycosphaerella berkeleyi] with productivity, and pod morphology were examined in F4 generation of two single crosses of groundnut (TMV2 × PI393516 and JL24 × PI393516). High levels of variability were recorded for leaf area affected by the disease, pod yield and pod number. High productivity was associated with larger pods, thick shells and low disease resistance while resistant lines were associated with greater shell thickness and smaller pods. The frequency of desirable recombinants for pod yield and green leaf area percentage with one or more characters such as shelling percentage, sound mature kernel percentage and shell thickness was very low. Combinations involving four or more characters failed to give recombinants indicating the persistence of undesirable linkages necessitating further reshuffling of genes
