Abstract
It is an acknowledged fact that rapid strides are made in Indian agriculture since the seventies. However, factors such as the ever increasing population pressure on land, limited potential for bringing new area under cultivation and the volatile food grain production warrant spatial and temporal intensification of cropping, particularly in the Semi-Arid Tropics (SAT) of India. Thus, developing intensive and productive cropping patterns is the crying need of the day. This essentially needs a through knowledge of the existing cropping patterns. And, here comes the main purpose of the present research, the prime theme of which is what farmers grow and why they grow.
