Abstract
A 6 X 6 diallel amongst three cultivars and three breeding lines was studied for ten characters. General combining ability (GCA) effects were significant for seven of the characters. Specific combining ability (SCA) effects were significant only for percentage oil content and 100-seed weight. SCA effects were more important than GCA effects for percentage protein content and shelling percentage; the reverse was true for the other characters, except for percentage oil content, for which GCA effects and SCA effects were approximately equal. There was a significant interaction between year and GCA effects for pod yield and seed yield per plant, pod length, percentage defoliation and resistance to Cercospora arachidicola [Mycosphaerella arachidis] and to Cercosporidium personatum [Mycosphaerella berkeleyi]. There were also significant interactions between year and SCA effects for pod length, and between year and reciprocal effects for pod and seed yield. Florigiant had the highest GCA estimates for pod and seed yield and 100-seed weight, and also gave progeny resistant to M. berkeleyi. The line NC3033 had the highest GCA estimates for oil content and had low GCA estimates for percentage defoliation. The cultivar NC5 had the lowest GCA estimates for attack by M. arachidis. The line NCAc3139 had the highest GCA estimates for percentage protein content and the second highest estimates for seed yield. In rows of progeny from individual F2 plant which had acceptable pod shape and size and which had low incidence of A. arachidis, the best parent for transmitting resistance to M. arachidis while maintaining good pod characters was GP-NC343, which was resistant to insects
