Abstract

A two-locus model was used to demonstrate that general combining ability includes effects of additive and epistatic gene action. When gene frequencies differ from 0.5, dominance gene action also affects general combining ability, and average heterosis depends upon additive X dominance interaction as well as dominance and dominance X dominance interaction. Negative associations between genes greatly inflate apparent specific combining ability. It is suggested that diallel analysis is of doubtful value in studying quantitative traits of self-pollinating crops
