Abstract
The relationship between leaf elongation rate, leaf width, leaf-area expansion rate, number of tillers per plant and net CO2 exchange with total forage yield per plant was studied. In the progeny of a 6 X 6 diallel, number of tillers per plant was highly correlated with total forage yield per plant. Path-coefficient analysis showed that both tillers per plant and yield per tiller had large positive direct effects on total yield per plants. Additive genetic effects were important for all traits except net CO2 exchange. Nonadditive effects were important for number of tillers per plant and yield per tiller. Broad-sense heritabilities were high for number of tillers per plant, yield per tiller and yield per plant
