Abstract
Numbers of ears and tillers per plant were studied for two seasons in a diallel of eight varieties, four of which were nearly isogenic lines of Atlas. Nonallelic interactions of the four nearly isogenic lines distorted the relationship between variance and covariance for both characters. There was a strong positive correlation between number of tillers and number of ears. Exclusion of the parents giving rise to epistasis resulted in satisfactory diallel-analysis graphs
