Abstract
Eight characters were studied in spaced F1 plants and densely sown F2 and F3 populations of eight varieties and 28 progeny. A Griffing analysis indicated that additive genetic variance was the most important component of phenotypic variance for all the characters except number of panicles/m2. Additive X year interactions were more important than nonadditive X year interactions. Hayman-Jinks analysis showed that the additive component was 2-16 times larger than the dominance components in the F1. In the F2 and F3, the dominance components became larger than the additive components for most characters. Further tests indicated that epistatic variance may have resulted in an upward bias in the estimates of dominance
