Abstract
An investigation was carried out against for bio-control of soil-borne root pathogen (Macrophomina phaseolina) causing charcoal root rot of groundnut plant in pot culture experiment by inoculating arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (Glomus fasciculatum). After inoculation of AM fungi (G. fasciculatum) and pathogen (M. phaseolina), there was significant decrease in severity of disease due colonization by mycorrhiza as compared to non-mycorrhizal pathogen inoculated groundnut plants. The various defense related biochemical parameters showed marked increase in their content or activity such as protein, proline, total phenol, total chlorophyll content, acid and alkaline phosphatase activity, peroxidase and polyphenol activity in mycorrhizal healthy or diseased ones in comparison to non-mycorrhizal diseased or control ones. Moreover, highest increase in defense responses was observed in mycorrhizal diseased ones. The frequency of mycorrhizal colonization in terms of arbuscular frequency showed higher colonization in mycorrhizal only treatment as compared to pathogenic mycorrhizal groundnut plants. Lower percentage of arbuscular frequency in pathogenic mycorrhizal groundnut plants confirmed that there was pathogen’s role in decreasing it when compared to non-pathogenic mycorrhizal ones. In spite of lowered arbuscular frequency due to pathogens presence, the severity of disease caused by the pathogen was significantly reduced by inoculation of AM fungi. Therefore, AM fungi may be used as other important option for bio-control purpose
