Abstract
During 1985-89, field experiments were performed in Austria, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru as part of an FAO/IAEA coordinated research programme to investigate the nitrogen fixing potential of cultivars and breeding lines of Phaseolus vulgaris. Each experiment included approximately 20 genotypes which were compared using the 15N isotope dilution method. Large differences were observed in values for percentage N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) and total Ndfa within and between experiments. The highest mean %Ndfa (71%) and mean total Ndfa (106 kg) were obtained for the experiment undertaken in Guatemala during the summer of 1989 due to favourable environmental conditions.
